• Frederik Pohl For Us, The Living: A Comedy of Customs Robert A. Heinlein   The wonderful thing about For Us, The Living is that in it we can see the seeds of many of Robert Heinlein's great later works, starting with the first notion for 'The Roads Must Roll' and going on to cover much of his lifelong thinking on politics and society. I'm very glad I read it.

• Frederik Pohl The Black Flame Stanley G. Weinbaum   Stanley G. Weinbaum's name deserves to rank with those of Wells and Heinlein - and no more than a handful of others - as among the great shapers of modern science fiction. Sadly, most of the marvelous works he produced in his all too brief career were in the form of short stories and novelettes, and so are overlooked by many of today's readers. Which is all the more reason to rejoice that Tachyon Publications has brought his novel, The Black Flame, back into print for us to read - and moreover, for the first time, it is published just as Weinbaum wrote it.

• Frederik Pohl Who Goes There?: The Novella That Formed The Basis Of "The Thing" John W Campbell   He was the greatest editor science fiction ever had. Take away John Campbell and the whole scene changes; others have contributed to the growth of modern science fiction, John caused it.
