That he wrote this book when he was so terrifyingly young makes me physically sick and consumed with envy. For once, a comparison with John Updike or John Cheever is not delusional, wishful thinking or marketing hype. David Amsden is an invigorating, original, and sickeningly talented writer. And no, I've never met this guy, so I'm not his friend or former teacher. |

A remarkable work, combining autobiographical detail, peasant superstition, political documentary, intertwining destiny, tragedy, generations of storytelling and humour. Stand back and admire Allende's talent, her literary ability even more potent for being stripped and harnessed in personal despair. |
